Immaculate Conception - St. Mary's
From the Desk of Rev. Msgr. Hugh J. Corrigan:
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (A)
These past few weeks have been very painful for the victims of earthquakes, hurricanes and gun shootings. We continually pray for them and their families. We Catholics celebrate Mass not only on Sundays but at least twice a day (8:15 and 12:05) during the week. Prayers for the victims are always offered.
In the past, because we thought we had no control over such disasters, we would call these awful events “acts of God” or “acts of the devil”. Today we know better. Most earthquakes, if they involve the moving of tectonic plates under the surface of the earth, are necessary for the life of our planet. Many hurricanes would have fallen into this category in the past. But not anymore. Increased global warming, caused by us , is making , matters much worse. The devil did not kill all those people in Las Vegas. It was a human being who was able to buy over thirty guns, some of which were the equivalent of machine guns.
Will we or can we do anything about preventing these things from happening in the future?

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: As autumn progresses, we heat more harvest images at our Sunday celebrations. Today we hear two readings about tending vineyards and yielding grapes. Ours may no longer be a agrarian economy, but surely these images resonate in our lives all the same. What are we doing to cultivate the reign of god in the fields where we are living and working?
Isaiah 5:1-7– The Lord seeks a harvest of justice.
“The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel”.
Philippians 4:6-9-Dwell in thoughts of purity and justice and you will know peace.
Matthew 21:33-43– “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”.
