Regarding Mass Obligation for 4th Sunday of Advent & Christmas
As practicing Catholics we acknowledge as one of the precepts of the Church the Obligation to participate in the Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation (CCC 2180 and CIC Canon 1247) - two major solemnities such as the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas merit two distinct religious obligations to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Thus, with regard to this coming 4th Sunday of Advent/Christmas (December 24th and 25th respectively),
two Masses would be required to fulfill our respective obligation
One celebration on Christmas Eve does not fulfill both obligations.
There are several options for how to fulfill your Sunday Mass and Christmas Mass obligations this year:
1) Go to a Saturday evening Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Sunday evening Mass (Christmas obligation)
2) Go to a Saturday evening Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Monday Mass (Christmas obligation)
3) Go to a Sunday Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Sunday evening Mass (Christmas obligation)
4) Go to a Sunday Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Monday Mass (Christmas obligation)
Note: The faithful have a right to ask for a dispensation from their pastors who may grant it on an individual basis for a just cause. (Canon 1245)
