SOCIAL JUSTICE SPEAKER SERIES
Transforming Your Life, Parish, and the World through Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home with guest speaker Marybeth Lorbiecki
Sunday, January 21, 12:30pm, Room 212They say each generation tries to pass on a better future for their children. However, right now that can be hard to envision. Many things seem to be in a kind of chaos, from national and international politics, to the many climate-related disasters and refugee crises, to the challenges of our youth and takeover of virtual reality, to the cover-up’s and scandals within the Catholic Church. It can be hard to see hope for a better future — or even a stable one. And yet, Pope Francis brings us back to the beginning of creation where God brought life and beauty and abundant life out of chaos in the acts of creation, acts that God invites us to join into even now. Scripture and Christ’s own presence have been giving us pathways to deep full lives filled with hope and beauty and love, and now scientific and social discoveries have been confirming these ways of thinking and acting. The encyclical Laudato Si describes this transformative path of joy and love that St. Francis knew and followed, and Pope Francis puts it in terms of our own lives today, citing the Scripture and the science and the ways we can break out of the boxes that hem us in and make us less than we can be. Marybeth Lorbiecki takes us from where we are to where we can be, individually and together, by exploring the vivid ways of Laudato Si, with stories of hope, science, and Scripture.

Pope Francis often speaks of joy in his daily homilies, and essays. What are some aspects of a Spirituality of Joy and how can all of us make joy the basis of our life as followers of Jesus?
