From the Pastor
This is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our Gospel reading is from St. John’s Gospel rather than from St. Mark’s that we usually have in this year’s liturgical cycle of Sunday readings.
In this passage while Jesus is teaching his disciples a large crowd approaches them. Jesus desires to feed them so that this miracle will foreshadow the last supper as this scene takes place just before Passover. One of the apostles points out there is a boy there who has some fish and bread with him but not nearly enough to feed thousands of people. The boy must have agreed to give up his bread and fish as Jesus blesses and shares this food with the large crowd. When you think about it, only a boy had sense enough to bring some food with him when going out into the countryside on foot to listen to a preacher for hours. Usually it is the adults who make proper plans for something like this, not their kids.
We are all part of the Lord’s plan for bringing his word to those around us. We may think that we are not trained or educated enough to do this. The boy in our Gospel this Sunday makes it clear that unlikely seeming people can serve the Lord quite well. Are we open to serving the Lord Jesus whenever he calls?
