Adoration Celebration for 20 Years
From the Pastor...
This is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our Gospel a rich young man comes running up to Jesus and breathlessly wants Jesus to tell him how to achieve salvation. Normally this would seem like the beginning of a great relationship or at least a brilliant encounter between a soul seeking holiness and the Lord Jesus. It was not to be.
This young man had followed the commandments of God found in the Bible. They are the basic minimum for right relationship with God. It does not say, however, that the young man was familiar with helping others with his wealth. But from the soul that seeks intimacy with God, a closeness which touches the inmost being, more is required than simply not harming others.
The love of neighbor as one’s self is the next part of growing in holiness. Jesus could see that his many possessions held his heart in thrall. He needed to let go of them to find what he was looking for with God. Jesus looked at him with love it says and invited the rich young man to take the next step and move beyond his possessions and seek greater union with God. The young man would not consider taking that step and sadly got up and moved off, away from Jesus. Things of this world hold our attention to the affairs of this world. We need help in raising our attention up from the things of this world. October is the month of the Rosary. Mary knows best the ways to closeness with her Son Jesus. Let us seek her aid in drawing closer to Him through praying the rosary with her.
