Today the pilgrims are in Caesarea, Mt. Carmel, Tabor, and the Sea of Galilee. Caesarea was once a Phoenician port, in time Herod built Caesarea into the greatest city other than Jerusalem in Palestine, with a deep sea harbor, an aqueduct, (See 1st picture on the right) hippodrome and magnificent amphitheater ( 2nd picture on the right.) that remain standing today. Herod renamed the city Caesarea in honor of the emperor.
Caesarea is important to Christians because Pontius Pilate condemned Jesus to death here. Here too Simon Peter baptized the first Roman, Cornelius. Paul was also imprisoned for two years in Caesarea. For a virtual tour of Caesarea click
